What are “AIS”, “SAS”, “PAIR” systems?

They are all variations on the same process: mixing air into the engine exhaust gas to burn off any excess fuel.
This has the effect of lowering emissions and getting the catalytic converter up to its operating temperature faster.

Why remove “AIS”, “SAS”, “PAIR” systems?

The systems typically only operate when the engine is cold and/or at low rpm, so have no effect on engine performance.
However, they can cause backfiring which becomes more noticeable with an aftermarket exhaust.

Potential Benefits of removing a AIS/PAIR/SAS system

The systems are designed to reduce emissions so should not be removed from vehicles used on public roads.

• Reduces/eliminates backfiring on deceleration, that is exacerbated with aftermarket exhausts
• Allows correct measurement of the air/fuel (A/F) ratio when creating a custom fuel map
• Easier cold starting
• Smoother throttle/power response. - Reduce weight and create space in the engine area when the valve and tubes are removed.
